Am I Missing Something? Shows where I just didn’t get the hype

For every person who is a major fan of a show, there is someone on the other end of the spectrum who doesn’t like it. What would be the fun if we all liked the same things?!

Here is my list of shows that I didn’t like/couldn’t get into that I know a lot of people love and rave about. Please don’t hate me for this…

1. Jesus Christ Superstar

I can safely say that Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals are not usually my favourite. While I can get on board with most of the music from The Phantom of the Opera and School of Rock, that’s roughly where the list ends for me. So it’s no surprise that two of his shows are on my list of shows that I’m just not on board with.

I saw a production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Cardiff last year, and it really was not for me. Even as the music was playing I found it easily forgetable. There was a lot about the show I didn’t really like – one of which being that it felt like you had to know the plot of the Bible before seeing it. I had hoped the show would explain it the plot a little better. It just wasn’t for me in any way really.

2. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

While we’re on the Andrew Lloyd Webber train, I thought now would be a good time to mention Joseph. This is one that really baffles me and I think I must be missing something, because the show seems to come around a lot! With a recent UK Tour AND run at the Palladium in London, this show must be a big hit for a lot of people – just not me! I can’t get my head around how whacky all the songs are (one set in Paris, one set in the Caribbean and so on), and again, just not a lot about the show appeals to me – sorry!

3. Eugenius

I am very ready to get some hate on this one as I know Eugenius is a big favourite for a lot of people! I watched the show on Facebook Live a few weeks ago in Quarantine when the show was streamed. And I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it would have been different if we had seen it live, I don’t know. I did enjoy the music and both Rob Houchen and Laura Baldwin gave excellent performances, so I can’t put my finger on why I didn’t like it. Just not for me.

4. Gypsy

This one I was really sad that I didn’t enjoy! I got the tickets from my family for a birthday when the show was playing at the Savoy in London with Imelda Staunton. We were front row and I couldn’t wait! And then I found that I couldn’t get into it at all. I found the plot quite weak and found the repetitive performance from the “kids” to be overdone, which became a little boring rather than being funny for me. Again, there are some songs that I adore from the show, and all the cast gave excellent performances, but the show as a whole? Not a fan.

5. Falsettos

Another one that I was sad not to have enjoyed! I know again the fan culture around Falsettos is huge so please don’t hunt me down for saying this, but I was really disengaged with the show when watching it. I couldn’t understand the show’s purpose or genre; to me it felt a little that the show didn’t even have answers to these questions themselves. In the production at The Other Palace, Laura Pitt-Pulford gave a great performance, especially during the song “I’m Breaking Down” (a rendition I won’t forget in a hurry!) I was really willing myself to enjoy the show throughout, but unfortunately that moment never really came for me.

6. Hair

Question 1, what is this show? I have to say, I did quite enjoy the production of Hair that I saw in Cardiff last year, but I still couldn’t really tell you what it was about or why. It was the whackiest, trippiest thing I’ve ever seen on stage and yes it was a right old laugh, but what was the point of it? I’m not sure.

7. Fiddler on the Roof

What I really struggled with in Fiddler on the Roof was the music. I found that the soundtrack didn’t have a single ear-worm and was therefore quite forgettable. I can understand why people do really enjoy this show, but I’m not one of them I’m afraid.

8. Mamma Mia

I really have given Mamma Mia multiple attempts but this is one of those hugely popular shows that I just don’t enjoy. When the film came out I think I fell asleep watching it for the first time, yet I still have seen it in the West End twice – neither of which particularly inspired me either. Yes, the dancing and singing is amazing, and when I saw the show with friends on the weekend of West End Live I had a great time, but more to do withthe atmosphere and company than anything else…

I find with Mamma Mia that I really don’t care about the story even a little bit. The megamix is the only part of the show that really interests me! But the show has been running for over 20 years in London, so I must be in the minority!

So there you have it, the shows (that I can think of) that I didn’t enjoy that everyone else seems to love!

What are yours? Where do you find yourself to be out of the majority?

Are there any of my personal choices that you absolutely adore? Let me know in the comments below!

      1. Yes, there are. Some of them I never saw (but know I will not like)

        1. Hamilton- overrated
        2. Love Never Dies- Phantom does not deserve a sequel.
        3. Sweeney Todd- already know I will not like it
        4. Into the Woods- Saw the movie and did not like the musical

        Some of them

  1. Interesting – haven’t seen many on this list.
Have seen Jesus Christ Superstar and loved it! Not so keen on Joseph or Phantom, though. For me, Heathers was hyped, but I just can’t get into it.

  2. I’m with you on all of them…except Eugenius! Oh my heart, I love it. The Facebook Live was the first time I’d seen it but I’d been listening to the cast recording for about 18 months or so previously. It’s just so upbeat and joyous, although coming from a family of nerds & geeks probably helps.
As for ALW, always feel everyone else is hearing something I’m not because, on the whole, it all does nothing for me. Not that he would care either way! And Mamma Mia (but ssh, don’t tell, I’m not much of an ABBA fan either!)
    Great list x

  3. I agree with all of these, bar Mamma Mia.. and gypsy as haven’t seen that one, yet…
A newer one to add is Waitress.. I know haters gonna hate, for me saying that.
But no earworms for me and also didn’t find the plot very exciting or even interesting.
