Just Club is a theatre company who produces part stand-up, part gig & part theatre, and they use the fusion of these mediums to tell stories that appeal to wider audiences, than potentially just stereotypical theatre-going audiences.
Just Club was formed by three students from the University of Hall: Matthew Collins, Jamie Nowell & Jake Marsden. The three loved the idea of the inclusivity and intimacy that comes with a club atmosphere, so definitely wanted to use that in the title for the company.
we need to be…just…club; Just Club
And that was how the name and the group was formed.
Just Club performed their debut play Standing Too Close on Our Own in the Dark, written by Jake Marsden, on 15 January 2019, which was the launch night of the company. They had an audience of 150 attendees and this is when Just Club was welcomed into the Hull theatre scene and the National Student Drama Festival. The NSDF thought the group were so great, Just Club performed there just three months later.
On the launch night of Standing Too Close on Our Own in the Dark, DJ Funlay played the night, and before the headline, Will Banks, Border Boy & Tash Bird performed.
On 7 August, Just Club will be performing their hugely successful show at the Edinburgh Fringe for one night only as a feature slot.
Along with performing their show, the team are hugely looking forward to meeting and welcoming other companies, producers and programmers in the industry, so if you see this amazing group of guys while you’re there, don’t be shy!
As well as this, Standing Too Close on Our Own in the Dark will be playing a four-night run at The Local Theatre in Sheffield as a part of their first ever season. They’re playing 5 – 8 June, make sure to check them out!
Just Club say:
we have been discovering who we are as a company, and what we have to say as a company, and we are so ready for the show to be the best it can be so hopefully audiences will relate and enjoy our work!
In a year’s time, Just Club hope to be working on their second show and using the skills they have learnt from putting on their first show (including crowd control & managing audience’s expectations), they hope they can continue to grow.
we are finding our feet, our voice, and enjoying the process of discovery!Just Club
Just Club are hugely welcoming and always looking for new people to chat to! Drop them an email and say hello!
